In summer, one of New Yorker favorite activities is to escape the city to the beach. Most of them leave to Coney Island or Rockaway Beach while some other take a car and goes to the Hamptons. But most people don’t know that there is a beautiful wild beach at 1h30 from Manhattan by public transportation named Fort Tilden Beach.

The MoMA PS1 ask the artist Katharina Grosse to transform a Fort Tilden’s decaying aquatics building into a monumental art installation. She sprayed brightly colored paint directly onto the structure reflecting the bold colors of sunset in the Rockaways.

The installation is set to be demolished in late 2016.

In the national park of Fort Tilden you can also find some abandoned military buildings from the WWII. The fort was decommissioned as a military installation in 1974. It was then transferred to the control of the National Park Service.
